This week, Steve Tobak on BNET.com shared 20 truisms that can change your life (in business). I agreed with half of the list and mostly laughed at the rest, but Steve is quick to point out that this is not meant to be read as an instruction manual.

But his list did get me thinking about my dealings with various charities, social enterprises and voluntary bodies this year. Consequently, I thought I would compile my own 2010 truisms and include what they suggest we should consider doing differe...

The Comprehensive Spending Review and economic crisis before that has led me to an inescapable conclusion; the country needs volunteers more than ever.

There will be less money to deliver various support services and many charities are having to tighten their belts even further to weather the current financial storm. The idea of the civil society is being introduced to help redress this deficit as well as strive for a better Britain for everyone.

I've witnessed some horrendous people management skills in the past month within two UK charities. They will remain nameless to protect the innocent but is no-one able to make the link between 'treating grown adults like children and showing them no respect' and 'high and costly staff turnover'?

This isn't rocket science but for way too many sector 'leaders' it seems to be an intellectual leap too far.
