NCVO has just produced an online guide to help VCOs working in the UK explore how climate-related trends such as changing weather patterns and knock-on social and economic effects (eg increased immigration and new health risks) could impact on their beneficiaries/cause and their work.

The guidance is based on findings from The Big Response project (run by NCVO, Green Alliance and Global Action Plan), in which four charities looked into the implications climate change is likely to have for them and began to make decisions about how to respond.

The project provided an opportunity to look at climate change from a fresh perspective, to show the relevance and importance of this issue for non-environmental charities of all shapes and sizes.

Rather than focusing on reducing carbon, the project demonstrated that climate change is an issue of social justice even in this country, because it will have a disproportionate impact on poor and other disadvantaged people who don't have the capacity to cope with the challenges to everyday life that climate change will bring.

By helping VCOs to understand the threat climate change may hold for their beneficiaries or cause - and their future ability to deliver services, they'll be able to make informed mission-focused decisions about what role to play in the face of this major challenge, whether that's developing new services, encouraging other providers to take this issue seriously, or even campaigning for bigger carbon cuts. Richard Piper, Head of Strategy and Impact here at NCVO, has come up with a new description of organisational strategy. Read his article on the NCVO Strategy and Impact website.

What do you think? He's keen to get feedback!

Hi there

NCVO’s Strategy and Impact Team has just published a new introductory guide to strategic planning.

In the guide, we propose a five-stage strategic planning process:

1. Get ready – prepare by deciding on your process and timescales.
2. Clarify your organisation’s purpose – revisit vision, mission, values, outcomes, knowledge of user need.
3. Open up options and choices – look internally and out.
4. Make decisions – refining options and priorities.
5. Communicate, implement and review.

It’s a really practical resource for managers and leaders who are either new to strategic planning or just want a clear introduction to how their organisation can develop an effective strategic plan.

It’s full of tips on how to get the most of the process and how to overcome likely challenges. It draws on research that we did during the Performance Hub project into what third sector organisations actually do when they strategise. So the guide’s really grounded in the realities of daily life in our sector.

And it’s a bargain at £8.00!

The Strategy and Impact Team at NCVO has produced an introductory guide to change management for organisations in our sector, ‘From Here to There: Managing change in third sector organisations’.

We decided to write this guide because managers in the third sector often face particular challenges such as stakeholders with very different motivations to those in the private or public sectors, as well as – of course – the need to manage short-term funding cycles and, for many, shifting relationships with the public sector.

Our guide acknowledges these particular challenges and is packed with examples and case studies from across the sector.

Building on established management theory, the guide aims to help you understand different types of change, choose the right approach and plan for a change that lasts.

The guide was published through the Performance Hub, a national project supporting the third sector on organsational performance topics (2005-2008).
