Disability Discrimination Act was a project dedicated to raise public awareness about the daily problems which are being confronted by disabled individuals as well as the role of business people in resolving those problems. Although there are a large number of people from the Horn of Africa (HOA) with disability in Birmingham, many business localities have no disable access. Disabled Action Group provided training and organized workshops for business people from the Horn of Africa and disabled individuals who exchanged their views and daily experiences, and then proposed- the best ways to solve difficulties which are being faced by the disabled people. Total number of Beneficiaries: 75 Area of benefit: Birmingham Why was the project needed? Many businesses owned by people from (HOA), mosques and some community centers have no disabled people’s facilities such as; disable toilet and ramps and their owners or managers have no idea about the importance of those facilities for disabled people; even they do not know the existence of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995/2004 /1995, which aimed to end the discrimination many disabled people face, giving important protection, including the duty of service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people so that they do not face difficulties with access to services. This duty came into force on 1st October 2004.
