A new Independent Advocacy Code of Practice for Gateshead

Vulnerable Gateshead residents are set to benefit from new guidelines spelling out the quality of service they can expect to receive if accessing independent advocacy services. Gateshead Advocacy Information Network (GAIN) launched a new Independent Advocacy Code of Practice for the borough in January. Gateshead’s Mayor John Eagle introduced the Code at a signing ceremony attended by Gateshead Council and South of Tyne & Wear Primary Care Trust (PCT) officials, advocacy project managers and advocates. Welcoming the launch of the new Code, he said it demonstrated the commitment of the statutory and voluntary sectors to providing "the highest standards of advocacy service possible".

The Code sets out a number of 'performance indicators' which "provide a means by which service users, funders, advocates and advocacy projects can check those standards are being met", said Steve Cowen, GAIN project manager.

The new Code represents over 12 months of collaborative working between the statutory sector (Gateshead Council and South of Tyne & Wear PCT) and voluntary organisations which provide independent advocacy services in Gateshead (Alzheimer’s Society, Age Concern Gateshead, Your Voice Counts, Sight Service, Pathways, Gateshead Access Panel, North Regional Association for Sensory Support, Skills for People).
